The goal of this article is to save you years of figuring out SEO on your own.
When I began in 2014, resources were scarce. I had to learn from forums (e.g. Black Hat World), books, SEO websites and I even took a $4000 cost offline course which was such a waste of money. It took me until 2017 to become an SEO specialist and achieve major success by 2023, making big profits from websites with mostly organic search traffic.
So, how to learn SEO in 2 weeks?
First, decide which type of SEO you’re interested in. There are three main kinds:
- Traditional SEO: Great for blogs or review sites aiming to rank for specific keywords.
- Local SEO: Perfect for businesses targeting customers in a specific area through Google maps and local searches.
- E-commerce SEO: Focused on ranking online stores.
How To Learn Traditional SEO?
Let’s start with traditional SEO, the foundation for all other SEO types, making it essential to fully understand it. This type of SEO applies to your personal blog or niche/review websites that you want to rank in Google for specific keywords.
I started my first blog in 2015, hoping to earn through Google Adsense. By 2017, despite my efforts, I was stuck making $500 a month until I discovered affiliate marketing. There’s a well-known SEO expert named Matt Diggity who teaches a popular course called “Affiliate Lab.” It costs nearly $1000, and I used to think it was too expensive to buy. But investing in it was a game-changer for me.
The course offers lots of lessons, and it’s best to begin with the “beginner’s lab” if you’re new, then move on to the “affiliate lab” section. “Affiliate Lab” also includes more complex lessons for later on. I really like how Matt keeps adding new content and updating the course. The latest update is on personal branding, and starting this YouTube channel is something I learned from the course.
Plus, if you join Affiliate Lab, you get to be part of a Facebook group with over 4,000 members. Everyone shares SEO tips, and the best part is, it’s a friendly place without any spam. So, if you ask a question, you’ll get real and helpful answers and no one going to spam you via messages.
What I’m saying is, don’t go for the cheaper SEO courses on Udemy or Coursera and I would not recommend extremely expensive SEO offline courses. It could be easily learned online.
If you really want your blog to rank well on Google and learn traditional SEO as fast as possible, then I’d say Affiliate Lab is the best choice for learning traditional SEO. In my opinion, the course could be done within 2 weeks and then you practice new knowledge on your blog. I wish I invested in this course earlier but better late than never.
How To Learn Local SEO?
Next, let’s talk about local SEO. It’s a bit different from traditional SEO because things like your location and proximity matter a lot. Your main goal is to show up in the “Google 3 pack,” which is part of the Google Business Profile listings. But, many of the basics are the same, so understanding traditional SEO is a mandatory starting point for learning local SEO.
Once you’ve got the basics down, local SEO isn’t too tough. You just need to focus on some specific things that matter more for local businesses.
I’ve looked into a lot of local SEO courses and honestly, didn’t find one that was worth it. In fact, I don’t think you need to spend money to learn local SEO if you already took traditional SEO courses. I’m working on a detailed, free e-book about local SEO that covers everything. It’ll be available for free by email when it’s ready, so don’t forget to sign up.
How To Learn E-commerce SEO?
Finally, we have e-commerce SEO, which is all about getting your online store’s products and categories to show up in search results, like for searches such as “buy party supplies for 30th birthday.” Beyond the basics, e-commerce SEO focuses a lot on having a well-organized website and technical optimization..
If you’re thinking about starting an online store, it’s crucial to get these things right from the beginning. There are plenty of courses available, but I really want to point out an article by Brian Dean on e-commerce SEO. It’s incredibly detailed and, from what I’ve seen, covers everything you need to know about the unique parts of e-commerce SEO. It explains how e-commerce SEO is different from traditional SEO and highlights what areas you need to pay more attention to.
What To Do After Learning SEO Basics?
After learning all this, it’s time to put your new knowledge to work. These days, you can set up a blog with WordPress in just 5 minutes.
I suggest joining several Facebook groups to take part in SEO discussions. Don’t be shy about asking questions. Also, follow well-known SEO experts on platforms like YouTube, X.com, LinkedIn, and check their content. These influencers stay current and share the latest, most relevant info on SEO. I mentioned my favourite SEO influencers here.
Finally, leep an eye on Google Search Central for the latest SEO updates from Google, but remember to think critically about their advice.
I hope this article helps those just starting with SEO.
